Advantage Jack Peace with Michelin – ACT BTC RD 3
With three rounds down Jack Peace (Sherco) extended his lead in the ACU Trial GB British Trials Championship finishing in front of elder brother Dan, also on the Sherco. They both pushed the defending champion Toby Martyn (TRRS) down into third position giving Jack the advantage in the overall championship positions.
The third round of the 2022 ACU Trial GB series moved to the north of the country and into the Lake District to Haveriggholme, Torver where the Westmoreland Club accommodated another good entry of 65 riders entered across the Trial GB, Trial 2, Trial 125 and Expert classes. Despite some early overcast weather, the sun shone through on the Lake District sections making them easier than anticipated. The first sections were in a heavily wooded area before the waterfall section took them out on the higher ground before dropping back down to the rocky on the hill side to complete the course.
The 2022 championship uses the unique ACU Trial GB marking system introduced in 2020 which includes a one-minute time allowance for each section to be traversed, competitors may stop, go sideways or reverse without penalty. However, going backwards whilst footing will incur a five-mark penalty. An additional championship point is awarded to the best performance lap of the trial to all four classes. The introduction in 2022 of the reverse for the starting positions in the main ACU Trial GB category whereby the winner from the previous round will be the first rider to start in this class continues.
With the win at round two, the reverse starting order introduced in the line with the 2022 rules, put Jack Peace at the head of the entry to open the sections on the premier Trial GB course. He looked confident from very early on with a very impressive solid clean on section three on the jagged rockery. Elder brother Dan, along with Toby Martyn were also showing good form as they both parted with just three marks to lead after the opening lap with Jack on four marks lost in this low scoring event.
Maintaining his positive riding it was Jack who raised the bar on the second lap with the best single lap score of the competition losing just two marks and with it securing the vital extra championship point. Despite a stop in section three on the final lap it was a very strong performance from Jack Peace to give him the win. With two stops on his final lap Toby Martyn was pushed down to third overall and it was Dan Peace who finished second.
Jack Peace (Sherco): “Despite riding at the front of the entry I felt confident all day and when you are in this frame of mind at an event it always brings out the best in you. The club had made a superb job of putting some very challenging hazards in and on my second lap I rode at the very top of my game which was reflected in the two-mark loss. Once again, my confidence in my choice of Michelin tyres proved vital to my success providing me with that winning edge to take the victory”
