After the success of the inaugural DL12 Indoor Trial in 2023 it was a welcome return to Sheffield in 2024 on 13 January for all fans of motorcycle trials. In the capable hands of the 12 x FIM World Trials Champion Dougie Lampkin MBE and the experienced promoter Jake Miller from G2F they had the 34 x FIM Trial World Champion Toni Bou (Repsol Honda-ESP) as the headline act. He was supported by a strong entry list of seven other top riders including: Jaime Busto (GASGAS-ESP); Gabriel Marcelli (Repsol Honda-ESP); Adam Raga (Sherco-ESP); Miquel Gelabert (Vertigo-ESP); Toby Martyn (Honda UK Montesa-GBR); Billy Green (Scorpa-GBR) and Harry Hemingway (Beta-GBR).
This fully seated stadium event attracted a sell-out crowd of 5,500 motorcycle trials fans who came to the Utilita Arena Sheffield to witness the event with its easy-to-follow competition format. The eight riders invited riders would compete over the six man-made sections consisting of steel, wood and concrete and of course the huge Michelin tyres. Two races would be included over the Michelin tyres with the four best riders proceeding to the final where the scores would be returned to zero. In the final the four riders would compete over six sections ridden in the reverse direction finishing with races with the eventual winner being crowned the 2024 DL12 Indoor winner.
With the crowd seated and excited it was action from the word go with the races over the Michelin tyres to determine the start positions for the riders first attempt at the six sections got under way. Great Britain’s Harry Hemingway opened the action in the sections as the action came quick and fast as the hazards proved almost impassable at times until one by one the passage though them became more obvious to the rest of the riders. Adam Raga looked good before both Jaime Busto and Gabriel Marcelli (Repsol Honda-ESP) parted with six marks each. Toni Bou was impressive from the start and his lap score of a single mark lost put him at the top in the qualifying.
It was a four-man Spanish final with Adam Raga going out first and the rider to attempt the sections in the reverse direction. Raga knew he was a trail blazer leading the way but showed a good strength of character with some super riding. Toni Bou though was in a very hungry mood, and this showed in his superior style, no one had answer and could not take the fight for the win to him. Both Raga and Busto were very evenly matched which was reflected in the contest for the runner up position which went in Raga’s favour by a single mark.
Toni Bou (Repsol Honda-ESP): “This was a super event and an exciting night for the crowd who witnessed my win after the disappointment in 2023 when I had to retire from the event with injury. I am very happy to take the victory and also in showing the younger riders that I am still very much at the top of my game. Anything can happen at the indoors and this is where you need every advantage to give you that winning edge. On the wide variety of man-made hazards, the Michelin tyres once again proved their superb attributes of providing wheel grip in the most extreme of conditions to give me the clearest of wins at the DL12 Indoor event”.
